Reduced engine power warning

Headed home from work all of a sudden a loss of power and I get the reduced engine power warning light and my check engine light comes on
To begin with I wasn't able to go much faster than about 20 mph ,after several turn off /turn on I can run speed limit but my check engine light is still on

Where do I start to try to fix this ?

Take it somewhere and have them pull the codes, that would give you an idea where to start. I think the auto parts stores do it for free.

Hook up a good scanner, it will tell you what happened and what set the codes.

Some parts houses can read the codes for you

Yep...pull the codes. The engine went into emergency "limp" mode

Yeah I wanted the occasional Maintenance not the every day repair

There's a chance that a chunk of the cat. conv. core has broken off(inside), blocking the exhaust flow.

I have a bluetooth device that plugs into the vehicle port to report vehicle codes to my phone. Go to autozone. they'll do something similar for free
