Rifle Tripod

I have a Caldwell field pod. Works good from a seated position. They offer another version called the field pod magnum that is taller.

I like the price range. The saddle is EXPENSIVE. Can someone enlighten me on why tripod set ups are so expensive?

Also, your ball head is it meant for rifles? I’m having a hard time finding a picture of how it mounts to the rifle online.

Quality, ruggedness and stability.

The manfrotto is not intended for rifle shooting. Great for a spotting scope, but less than ideal for a rifle with recoil.

I used shooting sticks for years when hunting coyotes. Super cheap (especially when you make your own) and just think the weight makes a tripod unnecessary. The sticks always worked fine for my application.

I have a Remington 700 .308 in a Magpul Hunter stock. Used for mostly deer hunting but am interested in shooting long distance. Rifle is equipped with a bipod for prone or bench shooting.

Budget is unknown. I am trying to find information out on this investment. I don’t want junk but don’t want to spend an arm and leg if there’s a brand people recommend. Mounting I am not opposed to a clamp the arcs rail looks interesting. Which would you recommend?

If you go the Hog saddle rout, it is an investment. The way I see it, if you build your own at 40.00, you will build multiples over the course of a year because DIY‘s are typically not durable enough nor are they rigid enough to handle the load of the weapons plus the load you place on that weapon if you do any preloading as some do. The durability of a DIY tripod is typically very flimsy and most folks use camera tripods. Not to say that all camera tripod your garbage however The ones you find at the local Wally world will absolutely bust on you in a heartbeat. Plus they don’t take the terrain like you think they may take the train. Spending $100 on this tripod or a comparable pod will be well worth your money and time, time being the biggest thing here.
