Rusty 75 gallon rv fuel tank... How to clean??

I decided to go a different route (cheap). So last night I cut the top out. I would not have believed there could be that much trash in a tank. Next is a bunch of work with a wire wheel and some sand blasting.

What did you do to make sure it wouldn't explode from the fumes? Would filling the tank with water make it safer?

they say that filling the tank and it goes for propane also
with it upright with water its safe, that the water pushes
all the vapors out the top. i go the extra mile and let
it run for a bit, then blow it out with an air hose and if
im still feeling paranoid i have a extendo match clip
thingamamudderfudder for lighting furnaces that
i use...still sketchy...went through all that years
ago when fitting a different gas tank to a car
and it mini exploded enough to make you count
your blessings

Filling it with water would have been the smart choice. Instead I chose to go with the "hey bubba, hold my beer and watch this" method by hitting it with the torch and burning off the excess gas the easy way. I figured the hole on the top and the fill neck would breath enough to keep it from blowing up.
