Rut yet?

Got this one in Troup yesterday evening. Watched him mount and breed a doe, then dropped him in his tracks with my Model 70 .270 WSM! He had swollen neck, black glands, and stunk to high heaven! First time I've ever actually seen a buck breed a doe in real life, made for a great story and a cool hunt!

Well if ya gotta go out .........guess its better than most ways!

It is turning out to be a strange rut in my area this year, and I am beginning to think there may be something to this late November full moon. Generally I subscribe to the thought that the rut is basically the same time every year unless there are unusual outside factors.

The large buck I killed at the end of October had the long gash from sparring, his tarsal glands were black, and he was stinking. For several days after I had camera shots of bucks dogging does. Then the woods (both hunting and camera) went quiet for about a week - maybe they were all bedded down??? Then in the last week or so, they have all come out, and I am getting tons of pics and sightings again.

Then this morning I was tracking a doe off to the right in the woods, when all of a sudden she bolted. I thought she busted me, but then 30 seconds or so later this little 8 point comes walking in. He never even glanced her way, and if you can tell by the pic below, there are no black tarsal glands. He earned a stay of execution from me since I wanted the doe, and I am holding out for one of the bigger bucks in the area.

So either the rut came early this year, or it has just been a trickle rut.

Same results as batoncolle, signs of the rut at the end of october and then things went south. So I told my buddy that the next full moon will set it off and it has.He killed a good 8PT thursday afternoon dogging does and I killed a good 9PT yesterday afternoon with more bucks seen chasing does.
