School me on Jon Boats

Hey Guys,

Need some info and advice on jon boats. Been bitten pretty hard by the fishing bug and need something to get off the banks and fish deeper water. I have a float tube for when its just me, but my daughter has started fishing with me and I'd like something we can go out in together. I have seen different lengths, widths, fiberglass, aluminum ect. I have absolutely no clue what I am looking for. Will definitely go used on this purchase, and would like to keep it around 600-800 for boat, trailer, and trolling motor which seems doable browsing through CL.

What should I be looking for? Anything to definitely stay away from? Does a jon boat require registration/insurance?

I think I saw a Riverhawk listed on here recently.
Much nicer on the water than a standard jon boat.
Most of the ones I have used were all riveted which get leaky over time. Try to go welded if you end up with one.

I live a quarter mile from the boat ramp at Kellog creek so mainly allatoona and probably half day to full day trips

I'd be extremely careful on Allatoona.
I'd opt for a bigger boat for that lake.

Look on craiglist, a lot of people already have them set up for fishing, and now its becoming fall, people will start wanting to unload them. Just make sure it has comfortable seat is the main thing.
