You won't be able to simply go to a UPS store. They won't touch a gun. It has to be a driver pickup or dropped off at a distribution hub. I don't believe they will accept a handgun from non-FFLs either, although I could be wrong there.
Both UPS and FedEx require overnight shipping for handguns, which is really expensive. If your local FFL will do it for $35, I'd say just do that and call it a win.
