Societies tend to become democratic and that's where they fail as no honest democracy has survived for much more than 200 years.

We were founded as a Republic but some are trying to change that. We will remain so as long as we will have it.

A republic is simply an indirect democracy. It suffers from the same flaw, perhaps even worse than direct democracy if the mechanisms of representation can be corrupted (as has happened).
