We've had a female King Snake living around / under our house for 15+ years. She sheds at least once a year, and I've seen her young ones moving into our wood pile. Last shed was over 5', but someone here said the sheds are longer than the actual snake.
Lots of DeKay's leaf snakes, and a few black or grey rat snakes.
Twice we've seen some form of water snake in our stream, but they move way too quickly to identify.
With the King snakes around, we've never seen a venomous snake. I pray it stays that way.
I found a snake skin in my f@#$&*g pantry the other day. The garage doors get left open more than I care for and the kitchen is the first room when coming in from garage. Pantry is first door next to garage so it could have came in, shed and left-I like to believe-but who knows. I can tell it’s a black snake but it’s a humongous SOB. I quickly got it out and into the garage trash. If my wife and 2 teenage daughters were to have found it this house would be nothing but a cement slab.
I don't see too many snake's, when I do it's usually a rat snake. Wish there were more I see a lot of chipmunks in the front yard. Pippa kills the backyard rodents.
I haven’t seen the first one yet this year but they’re here, those king snakes stank when ya scare ‘em. Over the years I’ve seen worm snakes, rat snakes, indigo snakes, eastern king snakes, copperheads and one Mac Daddy of a cottonmouth somebody ran over at the end of my driveway. About 30 years ago we had a snapping turtle in the yard about 16” in diameter and another one about 8”. Now those suckers were mean! lol!
I've always have had an interest in snakes. As a kid I walked the woods looking for them and catching them. I always thought it strange that when you look on distribution maps of certain species of snake, they showed them being all over the state but often times I never seen one or knew of anyone seeing one. I've never seen a corn snake, a yellow color phase rat snake or a pygmy rattler. They all, according to distribution maps, live around the area I live though. The only king snake I've had on my property was one I found crossing the road in Pike County and I let go here. Saw him a few times but eventually it disappeared. It had unusual markings. unlike the normal chain link fence yellow bands it had broad yellow bands more like a California king.
One is a banded water snake , and one is the mocassin. They are often mistaken for one another. Good idea to know the difference. The moccasin is from south of here yesterday. Water snake , out back. Very light colored moccasin. He is young.
