Consider forgetting the singles ministry (that's for you) and look into the ministries that serve others in need. Ignore the staring people -- they have nothing useful to add.
Work the soup kitchen, any ministry, or if you're Catholic (that's what I know) the Vincent DePaul Society or something equivalent. Just give back. Nature will take it's course, and in the meantime you'll meet people in a way that lets you really get to know each other without pressure. If not, you'll have done a good service, so no harm, foul, or loss.
In other words, if you make your life about others, at some point the right other will come to you. And if not, life will be so fulfilling that it won't matter.
