Smith and wesson prelock error gun possible

Just from your pics it appears to have some minor pitting evidence so I'd say it was media blasted at some point and refinished.
 
That is definitely aftermarket hard chrome finish. S&W had similar offerings but not on the model 586. One was on the Model 28, it was referred to as a satin nickel. The other which is not like this but they did a 686 in midnight blue, essentially blued a stainless gun it turned out to look like a dull blue. Really did not sell well as the finish was not as durable as a traditional blued revolver. Based on the frame markings if I am seeing it correctly that initially left the factory as a blued revolver. Manufactured late 80s 88-89
