This was my grandfathers .38, I figured it’s worth a shot to see if anyone knew anything about the history of this thing. I have no clue what model it is. Thanks for any information, pics are attached

Appears to be a Pre Model 10. K frame .38 Special 4in. Grips look period correct to the gun too. I would have someone give it a good, hands-on look over to ensure safety and tightness and then I would shoot the daylights out of it.
Thank you for the information I really appreciate it!

There is a * in front of the serial number, indicating it has been back to the factory. Take the stocks off and see if there is a date stamped into the frame along the LH side near the bottom. Check to see if the stocks are numbered and if it matches the serial number on the butt.

Will do!

Today we say things like "pre model 10"
but back in the 19-teens or 1920's when yours was made, they were called
Smith & Wesson Hand Ejector,
model of 1905,

"38 Military & Police"

(later collectors would add "4th Change" to reflect some changes in the lock work in 1915 that supposedly made them drop safe. That 1915 design was still used up until the early 2000s I think when S&W modified their wheelguns to be "safer" and more acceptable to products liability lawyers and the companies insurance underwriters.)

.
Serial numbers ran from 241704 in 1915 to 999999 in 1942.
