Snake ID? What is this guy

So, how much difference is there between a rat and a king snake? I say it’s a king in the pic, but a lot of you say rat...
The same thing really.
Most of the time King snake will have the grey rings around it....the rat snake is more solid in the black back and has grey specks but more solid grey on the bottom.
They mostly act the same, same eating habits , living , shedding, sleeping areas all the same.

Yes I’m thinking rat snake, I asked him what he was and he said he chose not to identify with any species or genus.

Well, if you see one of these, don't ask.
Copperhead that I killed in my front yard.

This is a rat snake. They are cousins, basically. You can tell the difference by smelling their breath. King snake breath smells like mead and virgins. Rat snake breath smells like... rats.

Most Eastern King snakes have vertical bands around them, and rat snakes more of a camouflage pattern. The vertical bands might be white or yellow, or grayish versions of those if the snake is close to shedding.
