It's a king snake

That's what I thought too.

I'll probably just leave it alone and not look too hard for it. But... if I hear screams from the backyard I may get a chance to try out my new Mossberg!

King snakes usually go underground, under fallen logs, under big rocks. They like to be under something, not in something.
Usually not inside a log or crosstie.

Yeah, I dont think that's the back half.
Non-poisonous have a single row from head to anal plate then double row to tail.
Poisonous have a single row of scales their entire length.
