So, is NIL obsolete now in College Athletics?

LSU:
"The athletics department’s total revenue was $200,476,979 in 2023."

Yes I understand their spend was almost as much. But that's football propping up a lot of sports no one gives a **** about. Football is a big money sport. I don't understand the resentment so many express over the players getting paid. The money isn't the problem, allowing transfers without any real consequence is. The good programs don't have players transferring out for more money, they have players that weren't going to see the field transferring out. As for the bad schools, they weren't going to compete at the top level anyway.
You're right it does, and I get that the players/coaches are the reason for it. And yes the no consequence transfers are out of control. But, the players are given everything already for the most part. Starters are likely on full ride scholarships and not paying for anything to go to a big name school. The money has gotten out of hand and we're not even that many years in to NIL yet. I can't imagine how absurd it will be in a few years.

Many of these big name college players make more than NFL stars, all while enjoying a free ride, room and board, and food, to a college of their choice. And the good programs are suffering from top ranked commits flipping before the ink is dry because they might not start right away, and a 2nd rate program is offering to start them and pay them more to get them to flip. You used to have guys red shirt and learn something behind the starters before coming in and proving themselves. Now "committing" to a school means jack **** with NIL.

It's broken right now.

Good coaches draw and keep good players. With the exception of Pop, very little talent has transferred out of UGA that will be missed. Kids like Burton leave because they were further down the depth chart than they wanted to be. Again, portal issue not money issue. Good coaches will still stomp through a season with a bunch of 3-4 stars. Kirby won 2 nattys with a walk on. Let the five stars go where they want, half of them turn out to be mid at best. Coaches still win the game at the collegiate level.

One article said the LSU football team's PROFIT was $48 million after they paid for everything and everybody. While getting college tuition, room and board may be worth $100 grand, most can not carry a full load or classes with labs or out of class projects due to practice and "voluntary" workouts. You only need to be a full time student - 12 hrs or which won't get you out in 4 years. Plus scholarships are year to year and are not guaranteed for your entire 4 years. I could see where the 100 or so unpaid athletes might want a bigger piece of the $48 million.

Most schools are not in the black. Those that are are due to boosters. Are you in favor of having only 20 teams nationwide?

It's not resentment. It's the realization something was broken, that was working, well, out of a false sense of something not being "fair". I agree, unfettered transfers are the biggest CURRENT issue, but it's because of money, period. That's an easy fix. But if you stop it, you'll have a handful of Uber rich programs with all the paid talent. I don't hate Texas schools, but I'd rather not see them win the championship every year.

Good players got a full free ride to a major university, a degree if they chose, the best training and equipment, the nest medical care and nutritional care money could buy, and a literal worldwide platform to showcase their skills. Name any other career that provides such a paid internship. But apparently that wasn't enough. I tried telling people this is what would come of it and heard the same old tired but the "school makes millions" absurdity. Even without researching how much most schools actually "make".
We've have become a nation of class envy and insatiable entitlement. It's nauseating.
the schools got WAY more!!!
