So why doesn't the AK74 get more love? You never seem to hear about it.

I love AK-74's. The 5.45x39 is an awesome round and cheap to shoot. 1,080 round tins for around $200. I got rid of my '74 a while back and have regretted it ever since. I'm looking for a reasonably priced Arsenal SLR-104FR now to replace it.

I have heard quite a bit from Vietnam vets on how they preferred the AK over just about anything we had...especially the M16. What do I know, I'd rather the Garand and just shoot through whatever you're hiding behind as you change uppers/do pushups on your rifle.

What is Russia using? Serious question. AK74?

Regular troops use ak74. After fighting in Chechnya Spetnaz transitioned to ak47. More suited for urban combat, better penetration thru concrete walls, car windshields.

The AK is a great choice for people who base the quality of a rifle on the initial investment and cost of ammo. It is also an awesome weapon for those who either don't know how or are too lazy to properly maintain their firearm. I like AKs, they are a blast to play with on the range. I just have never liked one enough to keep it very long.
