so, the wife wants a kid next year.

Some of these replies are over the top. We had our first kid within the first year of marriage. I am now 47 and she is finishing grad school and about to be on her own completely. I say if you have a good job and stable environment, start now. There are costs associated with having kids and you want to get those covered and be able to still save toward retirement. I also like the idea of being able to enjoy my daughters as grown adults and see where their life takes them. I had friends who waited to have kids and they will never know the adults they prepared for this world. They will be lucky to live long enough to see their son graduate high school.
Good luck buddy!

Get her another dog instead.

Already did that with the 3rd dog...

I have to say that the responses are all things that have flashed through my head. Watching my brother-in law with his kid and how much it has changed him is what has brought on this thread. He use to be a complete mess. Into drugs, wild parties, crazy stuff, had a baby and did a complete 180. I see how much happiness his son brings him even though his son is a complete mess just like him it still kinda got me wondering. I just can't decide if I'm willing to give up the freedom I have right now to go do what I want when I want to.

Go out and check with all your friends with little kids and or babies and rent it for a week...problem solved..that will cure your wife 's thoughts about having kids
people will laugh about this, but my wife and i did this back in the early 80's.all her brothers and sisters (5) had kids.we kept a couple a few times and that was it for us.we found out it was not for us.31 years later we could'nt be happier.

Just do it!

...assuming you don't work for any NON-Essential Government branch or agency, which by the way is one of the biggest oxy-moronic labels I have EVER heard in my life...

I'm on wife 2.0, she had 2 kids before I came along from her first husband. I was very much like you with my first wife, jealous of our time together, always working, not much in the way spending cash... not hurting for money, but not able to do much saving either. Anyway, once I became part of this family, and have 2 young girls to consider in my life and provide for... I realize now that I wasted a LOT of time, a LOT of years, and missed out on a LOT of thing and joy in my life.

My advice, plan to the best of your ability, save where you can, adjust insurance if necessary and go have some kids. This is what humans do and you'll NEVER be fully prepared for it, so why wait? Have the kids while you're young so you can play football with your son and not worry about breaking a hip!

I had mine unplanned and early. I am 29, my boys are 5 and 6.
I am super happy i had them early. while it was not easy, I dont think i could keep up with them when Im older.
They changed my life and i love them,

word of advice though. Buy the corvette/wrangler/harley first.

I'd like to get all the guns I want right now beforehand so that why my wife can't use the excuse of "we have a kid to pay for so you can't get that right now"

That sounds like a great plan until you are tight on money and she asks you to start putting things on the chopping block.

Well, we have already been down that road with buying the house and other things, she always understands that if I have to sell something to fund something else that isn't gun related, I will be getting another one when possible. I do believe she is finally at the point of understanding that the whole gun hobby thing isn't going away. She also has stopped putting up resistance against me getting more guns. "if you can't beat'em, join'em" kinda thing.
