I ride around on an old 1972 Electra Glide I've had since 1979
Maybe I'll see some of y'all on the Charity Runs around the metro area
owning an old Bike like this has it's rewards, like doing your own wrenching
when I go to the Harley shop for parts the only thing they say is "that's obsolete"

Had a motorcycle as a child and never strayed far from them... Raced WERA, CCS and Europe for a few years nothing big just grassroots stuff but did get to race in the WERA Grand National Finals at Road Atlanta, a highlight of my minor racing hobby.

Former race bike, now track day bike 93 CBR F2

Had to sell 06 GSXR 600, 16,500 RPM redline, 400lbs and a scalpel in the tight twisty stuff, tickets and lawyer fees as well as risk of license made me get rid of this fine machine.

Camped near Deals Gap. Picked the Duck up when I traded the 98 R1 in while stationed in Germany.

Use to be able to open it up around Suches. I rode the triangle 60/180/129 since the late 80's. Spent lots of time dawn to dusk riding TWO, 180, Richard Russell, War Woman Road, 28 to Highlands, Deals Gap, Tellico, Cherahola and all roads in between. On a 4 day weekend we would have to bring a spare set of tires to change out at TWO. The excessive LEO enforcement as well as the lowering of speeds, and removal of passing lanes has pretty much prevented me from riding that area. The last tickets I received up there were ridiculous.

TWO Frank Cheek's immortal words were; 5 miles that way (60N), 5 miles that way (60S) and 5 miles that way 180/Wolfpen gap rd. keep it down, after that you can kill yourself..... Lord knows we tried. It didn't help when Ben was catching 3-4 gears on the rear wheelie past Frank as he gave his speech. I miss his scrabbled eggs with shells and toaster waffles.

On GA 60, North of Suches an out of state plated (Texas) van was doing 5-10 miles an hour in a 35 MPH zone. When safe, signaled passed (double yellow) and waited the two other riders. Picked the pace and lost the two in the twisty stuff slowed down and a SUV with lights/siren running, sliding sideways in the oncoming lane, pulled over wrote me three tickets, impounded the bike and arrested me.

He was pissed the two other riders never showed up as they stopped and turned around after the LEO lost control and was sideways coming around a blind corner, nearly crashing and taking out my two riding partners.

Jim Bass my attorney couldn't understand why the arrest. Neither did I as I was polite and professional for the duration. All they wanted was the money, pay the fines (>$1K), no points accessed.....

I really like that Road Glide. I'd say it is more stable at speed than the Street Glide and what not since the fairing doesn't move with the bars. It'd be a serious contender if my wife rode with me, but she doesn't care for bikes. It's awesome to see someone taking a street bike (big one at that), down a dirt road.

I love the RG... I really like the newer frames (built after my '08)... so if I go to Alaska next year, I'll probably trade this one in.
As for 'dirt road'... look up Mokee Dugway on Google... This RG is so stable, I don't need a 'dual sport'... even two up fully loaded.


For me, the reason for a Harley is their dealer network, and the ability to get service/parts anywhere. In Mexico I stopped at a Military road block (gravel) and when my frontend went into a rather large rut, the spring on the kickstand got crushed. Easy to fix with a bungee, but when I got to Cabo, they had 6 in stock at 6 bucks each. (three of us needed them <g>)... we took them all, just in case. There's a lot of unpaved roads in Mexico. You couldn't do that with BMW or Honda.... they just don't carry the stock... (but they can always get it 'the next day')... [Here's where BMW and Honda riders say they don't need parts or service on the road]... HA!

As for the other posts about Harley people trashing Jap and other bikes... it's always in good fun. I've never heard anyone riding a Harley seriously diss another person in the wind. Just like guys who ride Sportsters should always wear there pink frillies on their girlie bikes with pride.

That's a sweet ride. And just goes to show the lack of knowledge about the AMF years... I'd buy one in a heartbeat... they're very reliable because usually someone has fixed the problems with updated parts.
