Did a SandySprings to Tellico / Cherohala Skyway loop and back today myself. Started out at 0930 and pulled in to home at 1910. Various stops along the way for fuel, lunch and even a Micky D’s burger in Blairsville on the return. So, right at 10hrs for me and 365mi round trip.
 
I hear ya on the day and all. But unless you have some kind of power adder or a built Moto with 14-1 compression you will not hurt it for a time. Maybe after an extended period, maybe.
But I worried about my Mercedes until I looked it up. 1 octane is not going hurt a thing.
Cars can adapt easier because they have knock sensors and can adjust the ignition timing accordingly... But bikes don't have any of that, so I figured it was best not to ride it hard till I got the right fuel in there... Its running a 12.5:1 compression ratio which is still pretty high...

Any modern high performance do have that capability. The O2 capability will fix in most cases.

I think it would take more than 12.5 to do damage. Then it’s a simple matter to fatten it up.
They are tuned from the factory to be safe any domestic pump gas.

But hell till you are sure don’t take any actions that make you feel uncomfortable.

The problem is that bikes don't have knock sensors, and the O2 sensors are narrowband. Cars have knock sensors and Wideband O2 lambda sensors... The narrowband sensors have such a limited range of operation... If the AFR is even lightly outside of its range, it doesn't know if its high, or low, or by how much... so its adjustment range is minimal and its limited to the closed-loop section of the fuel and ignition tables, which is typically 5,000rpm or lower, and under 20% throttle. Anything outside of that, doesn't get touched even if the AFR is within range of the O2 sensors... If it's off, it stays off.

That's why I kept the RPM low and light engine load until I could get to another gas station and get the right gas in there...

Ducati makes a point of telling owners to never use less than 90 octane(or whatever the Euro version is, I think 95), or you risk damage and voiding of the engine's warranty... Best not to risk it!

It's not a road you can really rip on unless you know it inside and out, which I don't. But its still fun, and almost NO TRAFFIC on a Saturday, which is more than one can say about the Dragon...

It's not a road you can really rip on unless you know it inside and out, which I don't. But its still fun, and almost NO TRAFFIC on a Saturday, which is more than one can say about the Dragon...

Great vid.. enjoyed it. I’ve never run it in that direction. Always came in the other way after Cherohala or the Tail and….never at those speeds…lol
BTW..the store / station at the beginning of Wayah has some decent boiled peanuts!
