I had always considered Mora knives on par with a 4" Fiskars fillet knife, and I'm not a fan of knives with no guards on them. Especially the wooden handled toothpick Cody wore around his neck.
But S. Johnny mentioned Mora knives in another thread and it got me to re-consider.
So, Johnny, this knife porn is for you!
Mora now makes dozens of variants on their original design.
Lots of colors to choose from, several blade thicknesses and various metals to choose from.
They are not fancy, and they don't have full tangs.
But they are super light, super sharp, dirt cheap, and tougher than I expected.
Here are 3 from the "Companion" line:
The top in gray is the "Robust."
In the middle (green) is the "Companion."
At bottom (orange) is the "Companion Heavy Duty."
The Robust very slightly larger than the Companion HD, and they are almost identical, @ 1/8" thick blades.
The Companion has a thinner blade and handle, and an unfinished backside of the blade.
It is easy to file the backside flat for better scraping on a flint.
The two thicker blades are nicely finished, but the backs are also rounded rendering them impossible to use with a flint and difficult to file flat.
The sheath colors are obnoxious and cool in a weird sort of way.
You won't lose them.
My wife wanted a leather sheath, and there are nice choices available.
But I can't justify an $80.00 sheath for a $15.00 knife.
"Pathfinder LLC" (Dave Canterbury's survival school) has a nice leather sheath for @ $15.00!
The leather sheath is short, but will fit a Mora #1, so it is REALLY tight on these plastic/rubber handles.
No worries about losing it.
The plastic sheathes are a great place to wrap duct tape, but that button on the gray sheath will have to go.
For less than 5 ounces, these won't take up much space in your backpack.
I'm putting one in my cook kit with the plastic sheath for ease of cleaning.
That way I have a clean, sharp knife for food prep. and an emergency back-up if I lose my ESEE!
