Stocking up on Nickels?

I think the push to save nickels is a little more simple. It is the only piece of currency in the US in which the metal content is equal to or greater than the face value. The choice is not between holding silver bullion, which you would pay more then face, but to hold nickels instead of any other coin or paper money. It is somewhat impractical given the volume of nickels needed, but the reasoning is sound. A nickel is not a fiat currency when its metal content exceeds its face. Theoretically, it is no longer just backed by the "full faith and credit" of the US gov. It is also backed by its metal content. Pennies do not have metal content equal to its face unless it is a copper cent made prior to 1983. Today's zinc pennies do not have a penny of metal value.
