not too long ago i got a leather stop with some green rouge to rub on it really finished the blade up nice way better than my leather only strop. Well after i finish up the blade the green stuff on the leather slowly dries and chips off when reapplying the chipping is a little worse. Any suggestions or is that just par for the course. Should i wash it off every now and then any other related knowledge tips and tricks is always appreciated.

Stropping question

I’ve never used the the green for stropping, always use the raw leather only. I’ve used it on buffing wheels with great results. I would say you are correct that you would clean it after you are done with it.
You maybe loading to much of the green stuff on the strop. A light coating is all it needs. If it is flaking, to heavy of a coat. I used red rouge. Heavy cardboard works great for stropping, the calcium carbonate that is used for a filler in the cardboard to add weight and does the cutting. I have had my strop for 40 years and loaded it one time when it was new. I have never cleaned my strop.

Have to agree, over loaded belt. I'd lightly scrape away excess then use. Green is chrome polish for stainless steel, works good but more expensive than old red rouge polish and does no better. Just a light rubbing is all that's needed. Plus, an old used belt works just as well and a whole lot cheaper - $0.50 at the thrift store.
