Go to Tybee or Jekyll if you like dark gray sand and dishwater waves. Best southern beaches are on the gulf coast from Perdido Key, Fl., east to St. George Island. Pensacola Beach, Navarre, Ft. Walton, Seaside, Rosemary, Inlet, and P.C. all have the most beautiful beaches in Florida. Inlet is just west of P.C., and is a good place, with the amenities of P.C. close by. Alabama beaches bring on the off-shore oil rigs. I've been to every beach in Florida from the Al-Fl. state line to Marco Island, and from the Ga-Fl. line to just north of Miami. The upper gulf coast has the best, IMHO. Clearwater is nice on the west coast, but crowded. Melbourne has nice beaches on the east coast.
My personal choice is St. George Island, Florida, 73 miles east of P.C. Been going there 20+ years. Got to be a true beach lover there, though. You could rent a nice house, with pool and some privacy on or near the beach in the off season for 2k or less down there. Stay in the Plantation (gated) and have great privacy and a short walk to the beach in the off-season for less than 2K, too. I go every fall.
