The Forever Rifle: rOm's Scout Rifle

So why buy a rifle with a scout rail on it and then mount the glass in the traditional place? If that's the plan, I'd look at the patrol model of the same rifle. The bolt was fine. It ran smoothly and had nice, crisp actuation and closing.
I like the ghost ring rear sight but you make a good point if I’m just going to be using a scope with it 90% of the time.

“Cocaine Bubba”, ahhh, the cut down into a pistol Mosin.
Well...at least there was a reason for turning Mosins into Obrez pistols many decades ago. But in recent years I have seen some truly horrible **** done to mostly Mosins but other innocent surplus rifles as well. I personally own an Ishapore Enfield in 308 on a damn plastic stock with a cut down barrel and an 8 Ball knob for a bolt handle. BUT...I didn't do any of those mods. I just traded into it because I missed owning a 308 and it's kinda ghetto fabulous.

Cool build. Looking forward to progress.

I fully expected a lever gun in .357/.44 magnum when I opened the thread. Pair with a revolver.

Maybe I'm just projecting.

My God, there it is again. Truly one of the greatest rifles I have seen on ODT. I should have asked the first time I saw it posted, have you named it?

Romi, if you were "only going to have one" --just 1 working firearm in your RV as you travel the country-- wouldn't self-defense be a major role that you would expect this firearm to fill?

And if that is true would you really want the slowness of a bolt action paired with a high-powered flat shooting long range bottleneck rifle cartridge?

The scout rifle sounds like a good long gun for hunting game for survival or even engaging enemy forces at hundreds of yards distance...

But if some bad guys menace you and your family around your RV I'm thinking you would want a carbine or SBR --something short, accurate enough to do head shots at 50 yards but no more accuracy needed than that, and rapid firing.

Rather than a bolt I'm thinking a semi auto , lever or pump action. Probably the latter two would be more acceptable to the socialist states that have restrictions on semi automatic assault weapons.

A 16 inch barrel pump / slide action carbine that holds 10 to 30 rounds of a straight wall cartridge would be my pick.

That thing is awesome. 😍

See I told y'all. And I traded a plain old Marlin 336 for it from another local member a few years ago.
And just like always...in a damn Kroger parking lot.
I dig the Enfield action but not as much as the Mauser action. I like how this one was already Bubba'd so that I don't take no blame. I'm okay with the plastic furniture since most of the original Ishapore furniture is in pretty poor condition these days. If I had my preference I would rather have the Navy Arms knockoff of the #5 Jungle Carbine that was in 308 instead of 303.
