Yup. The rifle I had functioned well. It was just too heavy and clunky for what I wanted. Glad you're happy with it...and $450, you did alright!Bit the bullet and picked up this Mossberg Patrol from another trader yesterday.
For $450 I have no complaints.
I put 10 rounds through it this morning and it was more accurate than I am with iron sights.
I was pleasantly surprised by the bolt, not as smooth as my Tikka but better than my new Savage.
I know the quality control is hit or miss but it seems I got one that was made on a Monday.
It’s hard to believe such a compact little rifle can be so heavy.Yup. The rifle I had functioned well. It was just too heavy and clunky for what I wanted. Glad you're happy with it...and $450, you did alright!
It really is surprising. I suspect it has something to do with the heavy profile on the barrel, but I think it's largely the stock. It's just ... dense. It’s hard to believe such a compact little rifle can be so heavy.
Depends on what cartridge you're shooting. You don't want to get too light.....It really is surprising. I suspect it has something to do with the heavy profile on the barrel, but I think it's largely the stock. It's just ... dense.
But I think that's the trend. Lightweight is the new black, I guess...or whatever the metaphor would be. I mean, when you consider that your average bolt action is going to weight around 2 lbs and the the barrel adds another 2 or 3 lbs, you put it in one of those Magpul Hunter stocks that weigh over 4 pounds (!) by themselves and you're pushing 8 pounds - before any kind of optic or loaded mag - in a bolt gun. That's ridiculous.
For sure....but a .308 bolt rifle that weighs almost 10 pounds? Nah...I'm good.Depends on what cartridge you're shooting. You don't want to get too light.....
I have one that weighs @ 6lbs with scope. It ain't a range gun. But it shoots one hole groups at 100ydsFor sure....but a .308 bolt rifle that weighs almost 10 pounds? Nah...I'm good.
Connecticut? How gross! That New Jersey all my places never to go!I'm usually pretty generous in my reviews of rifles, but I think you're better off with the Ruger than the Mossberg MVP. I didn't like the feel of the Mossy at all.
One thing to watch out for, when it comes to your "50 State Compliant Scout" is that if you have a threaded barrel, Connecticut (at least) considers that an assault weapon if you also have something scary like a detachable magazine, so you might want to think about a silencer solution that uses a pinned QD-type connection via a brake, and not a flash-hider.
Or just avoid Connecticut (which really, isn't an awful idea)
