Not sure why, but been doing some thinking here lately. Sorta thinkin about..well like the title says..uprooting. Not sure where I want to go. Born in Bradenton, FL round about the Bradenton Beach area and always had a soft spot for that place. Not just a hometown, but that place is just amazing. Found out that the local PD is hiring right now and I have been looking hard at it. Little backstory, I started at UPS about 3+ years ago hoping that I could work my way up to a decent position. Now obviously unforeseen by me, as soon as I started there the economy tanked. So instead of using my 3 years of seniority to get a decent job, I'm still sitting here making $12/hr, 4-5 hrs a night:ohwell: and they're letting go of a couple drivers because of no work:(. It sucks, but I know we're pretty much all in this boat. So pretty much I guess I'm sorta just talkin here, but also wondering if anyone else has just "up and went for it" hoping for the best. How'd it play out? And who knows, if I do go for it and it goes well..maybe we can have a big ODT barbeque out at the beach:rockon:

I've done it, moved from Bradenton (not my hometown) to Athens, found it's harder to find a decent job here than I thought. Been here about three years as well, not saying I made a mistake, but be sure that you have a job where you are going.

The "geographic cure" doesn't always make the difference you think it will, sometimes you need to look at yourself and see what's holding you back.... (not trying to be insulting, just, I've been there and I'm there now)

Good luck!

well I was born and raised in Miami, Fl. but had family in carrolton,Ga so we came here every year for vacation and allways loved the woods and mountains and the slower pace, so at the age of 43 my wife and I moved here to get away from all the crap in south fla and the year long heat, we both got good jobs and was loving life, then the world we had stoped and kicked us off, my company was shut down and my wife was laid off 6 months later, and it is the same way back in Fl where we came from my buddy down there tells me. I have had people tell me to move to where there are more jobs, (where that is I have no clue) but I moved here to live here and I am not moving away, I also have some health problems and this is where I want to be for what ever time I have left.

Sorry to hear about the circumstances. I would never move without a solid job, with all the pertinent stuff in writing(the writing won't do a whole lot, but it will be of some help).
Way I see it, in spite of what the politicians are doing or not doing to help with jobs, it looks to be getting ever so slowly better.
My advice if you have decided to move would be to see if ups has any openings where you want to go, if you haven't checked already.
Best of Luck to you.

If you get the job make the move. Just don't move to try and a get a job. Move to take the job you now have. In this economy you have to follow the work.

I'd be sure to get the job first in this economy. I moved up from Florida with my parents when I was in high school, but they had retired. I've been fortunate up this way to make it through school, find a job and marry the love of my life. I can't say that transplanting was a bad thing for me. That being said, if you want to go plan for it. You'll never be happy until you get what you want, just don't go blindly.

I was in a great job, close to home. The company made me an offer to move to Chattanooga, more money, better position and more fringe benefits. I took the job, put my home on the market, wife quit her job here, found work in Chattanooga. Moved to Chattanooga in February, 2009. By September, 2009, company closed the location. Luckily, my home did not sell and I did not buy in Chattanooga. Company moved me back home with same pay, doing the same job I left. By March, 2010, company closed this location.

Moral of the story, the grass may seem greener someplace else, but make sure it is not because of a septic line. The company I worked with wanted me to move to Fla, I declined, they let me go. Where they wanted me to move in Fla, is now closed. In this market, no job in the private sector is secure.

I'm also from sofla, Ft lauderdale, economy not much better there, housing, tourism starting to come back, crime there is crazy. Always need cops. But the pay sucks from what I hear, the big money is private duty work. Ga not that bad

Very valid points fellas. Yeah I have a good bit of family and really life long friends down there so I feel the support system would be pretty awesome. As far as the job, yeah definitely not going anywhere until a job is set in concrete waiting for me. Don't want to pack everything up and haul out on hopes and dreams lol
