This map looks interesting

I don't care how arrogant you are. You cant drive on wet ice without chains or spikes. This is true around the globe and YES the laws of physics even affect people from up north. People from the south don't invest in a set of snow tires because we would only use them one day a year. This makes traffic VERY dangerous when it does snow/ice.

FACT: Snow and icy roads cause more fatalities yearly than any other hazards on the road.......Even for people from up north.

True statement. I remember driving on the Garden State Parkway in NJ one day and it was snowy. I was in my Sentra puttin along and a Hummer H2 passes me moving at a pretty good clip, dude must of hit a patch of something and he ended up losing control and sliding off the road into a ditch. The worse thought in the world is thinking that having 4WD/AWD means you can drive normal in snow/ice. I don't matter if you have 8WD ice=no traction.

I drove for several hours with normal all weather tires on wet ice and snow yesterday, along with many others. No chains or spikes. Just use a lower gear, slow down and leave space between you and the next vehicle. There were a few in ditch, but you usually saw them speed by a few minutes before.

In '93 they did the same thing. I was staying in Blairsville and we were tired of the false forecasts. So we went hunting for some sure flurries....on top of Brasstown Bald. We stayed there for an hour or so and it started coming down HARD. By the time we made it home there was already a few inches on the ground. The next morning we measured 27" in the middle of the road. Some of the drifts were 5 feet deep or more. My entire car was completely under snow. Several people died that didn't have emergency food and heat.

NEVER trust the weatherman and always be prepared.

I spent 20 years in Alaska, I used studs only on my truck for 2 years. Studs help you to get going, but do nothing for stopping or steering . Good all seasons is all you need, Nokian WR, Goodyear Assurance, Hankook Optimo 727. Put the transmission in the second gear to get going and to lessen the chance of your tires slipping.
