Travel out west must see destinations.

Not sure what your budget is looking like, but I would consider looking into the cost differences with a fly and drive if seeing more is top of the agenda. Flight into Bozeman (close to Yellowstone) wandering around Yellowstone and Tetons for a week, then fly from Bozeman to Vegas (close to Grand Canyon) wander around Grand Canyon (arches etc) for a week, then back home would maximize time. Flights can be cheaper than you might think.

Now if the allure of driving across the country is the main allure of the trip, then that won't work. I get that allure, I had it, too, but that allure is growing less and less every time I drive across the middle...lol.

Just remember when planning drives, it's kind of like Alaska, things take longer to get to than what the map might tell you. You're gonna stop more than you plan, and find things to see you didn't know were there.

And stay off the interstates after you get west. Put the google map setting that says avoid highways, it will take twice as long to get where you want to go, but well worth the extra time.

Heck I do that even around GA and have taken routes I never knew were there.
I have considered that but really want to follow the Oregon trail route just to get a feel for the history and see what the settlers went thru traveling west. Then see as many attractions as I can while making the journey out and on the return trip.

Sharing this in case you haven't found it yet. You might want to add the Grand Canyon as a different trip if you are going try to follow the Oregon trail route as much as possible.

If you are going to Yellowstone, stop by Jackson Hole,WY, see the Grand Teton mountains !

Definitely gonna see yellowstone thanks great info.
To me, the Grand Canyon is a must see. I pulled up beside in a car and ask my Wife what she thought. See said it was just a big hole in the ground........ :doh:The Redwood Forest in Calf. is nice as well. Then Glacier National Park in Montana. Also, Little Big Horn Battlefield. YelIowstone National Park in Wy. I second the gun museums. There are 2 in Cody Wy. Buffalo Bill and another one, can't remember the name. I took a day to go through both. Depending on the time of year you go, Wanenmacher's Tulsa Gun Show. Largest gun show on earth, really. 4000+ tables. If you can't find it, it just about wasn't made......There are other shows out west too.

This will be our first trip and was thinking two weeks mostly driving to a different location each day. But will stop if we see something we want to explore more.
The trip I took was@ 4-5 weeks. The first week, I traveled 4k miles. Here to Northern Calf. and up the Western seaboard including hiking down into the Grand Canyon. The West is a grand wide open space. It's nothin for people to travel 100-150 mi. for basic things

Thats why i posted this string to get this kind of info. Thanks
Best time to travel out West is May and June. Because the weather can be unpredictable, seriously. I went in the fall, Oct., last time. I was crossing over a mountain range between Reno and North Calf. It was sleeting and snowing at @ 7k Ft. elevation at night. There was a little pucker factor goin on. But I was in a 4x4 truck

Thinking about driving cross country for a vacation. Looking for advise on travel planning. Places to go , places to avoid. Best scenic routes to travel ,things to carry. Will be traveling by van. Thinking about Georgia to Oregon. Loosely following the Oregon trail route.
For road trips like that I use the gasbuddy app.

It’ll give you pretty accurate fuel prices along your route. It has a map function so you can size things up and figure out your fuel stops.

I have driven to the Oshkosh airshow in Wisconsin. I learned the hard way that refueling at the costco in Detroit was twice as expensive as tanking up before I left Ohio.
