For road trips like that I use the gasbuddy app.

It’ll give you pretty accurate fuel prices along your route. It has a map function so you can size things up and figure out your fuel stops.

I have driven to the Oshkosh airshow in Wisconsin. I learned the hard way that refueling at the costco in Detroit was twice as expensive as tanking up before I left Ohio.

Also remember gas may be 100-150mi apart. No kidding. If the sign says next gas 100mi, it's for real. Also, it's over 1000mi across Tx

Best time to travel out West is May and June. Because the weather can be unpredictable, seriously. I went in the fall, Oct., last time. I was crossing over a mountain range between Reno and North Calf. It was sleeting and snowing at @ 7k Ft. elevation at night. There was a little pucker factor goin on. But I was in a 4x4 truck

If you are going to Yellowstone, stop by Jackson Hole,WY, see the Grand Teton mountains !

Sharing this in case you haven't found it yet. You might want to add the Grand Canyon as a different trip if you are going try to follow the Oregon trail route as much as possible.

You might still encounter a little ice. Never saw ice in June, but it starts getting hot. Remember, it's the desert. On physical excursions, hydrate. Altitude sickness can be real
