I have been a diabetic for over 30 years and tried lots of stuff, and rotated though a couple of different medicines. A couple years ago I read a study out of England where all the participants who stayed with the program for 6 months lost 50ish pounds and became NON-DIABETIC. At the time I wasn’t ready to starve myself. Over the years I cut out all the sugars. I figured out that the next biggest culprit is carbs. When I changed from finger stick blood tests to a wearable continuous blood sugar monitor I learned way more about what different foods will affect my blood sugar.

About 2 years ago I was rejected for a medical for my pilots license and I ended up making radical changes to my medicines and my diet. I had been taking insulin, metformin, and jardiance. I cut out all insulin, all carbohydrates and doubled my jardiance. Since that time I got my special issuance medical so I can fly. I have lost over 50 pounds, 5 inches on my belt line, and my blood sugars have been really predictable and good.

Until recently I was usually having 2 meals a day. My first was late morning with my medicines. The other was later in the evening, again with my medicines. For those who don’t know; Metformin is one of the usual medicines for diabetes that must be taken with food. Failure to do so will result in explosive bathroom emergencies.

I had already lost 50 pounds, cut out all the sugars, cut out all the carbs, I was down to 2 meals per day, and drinking unsweet iced tea with lemon everyday. I kept thinking about the study out of England and started looking at intermittent fasting and the science behind intermittent fasting. If you look at the Muslims as a group. They have a religious mandate for periodic fasting and as a group have one of the lower incidences of diabetes.

So long story short, I cut myself back to one meal a day to promote the Autophagy process.

What is Autophagy? It is a cellular process where cells break down and recycle their own components, such as damaged proteins, organelles, and cellular debris. It is a crucial mechanism for maintaining cellular homeostasis, recycling nutrients, and eliminating harmful substances. Apparently the scientists have figured out for some time that never missing a meal is kinda the recipe for turning us into type 2 diabetics. The study out of England shows that intermittent fasting/Autophagy will induce changes to restore the bodies natural insulin sensitivity.

I’ll post back in the future, but right now I’m giving this a go.

The 3 meals a day idea is just corporate brainwashing to get us to spend more money. I do one meal a day too. Very rarely do I have a second. I was doing a yogurt cup in the morning but it started giving me heartburn so I just stick to early supper now.

You did all the meds. "modifications" on your own or was it doctor directed?
A little of both. A couple years ago, I was with the VA and a doctor suggested I double my Jardiance. Everything was working at the time so I declined. When the FAA rejected my application for a medical, they didn’t like my insulin with the other medicines.

I cut out the insulin, doubled the Jardiance (as the other doctor had previously suggested) and I made the decision to cut out ALL CARBS. My FAA rejection paperwork said I could resubmit in 90 days, which happened to coincide with my next VA appointment. I went back to my endocrinology appointment with the latest blood test and the letter from the FAA. We talked about what I had been doing and I asked for and received a new letter from my endocrinologist to the FAA.

I get a visit with my primary care physician every 6 months. Recently I waited to start this intermittent fasting to have this conversation with my doctor before starting. They recommended against it. But you know what they say. “If you want to get something different than you are getting, you gotta do something different than what you’re doing”.

I’ve played their game. I know exactly what I’ll get if I continue doing what they recommend. This is my attempt to not just live with it but to beat it. The pharmaceutical companies don’t want you better. They want you buying 1 pill per day for every decade you are alive.

So you mentioned it a few times...Keto. I cut out carbs 5 years ago and it was the best decision I ever made. The "food pyramid" is completely upside down.

I believe that the doctors today are only good at reading blood tests, and handing out prescriptions in reaction to the tests.....My life is similar to yours, it appears.....got the Metformin, got the blood pressure pills.....maybe I haven't been with it as long as you....HOWEVER he recently sent me to a Kidney specialist due to "protein" in my urine....well....turns out that MANY drugs are bad for your kidneys(don't know if Metformin is among them)...BUT....MANY are...guess what I'm typing about is basically.....all they(doctors) seem to know what to do today, is prescribe drugs.....so what about the ramifications....."We'll just get you another drug to treat what ever it is that you have now come up with"......
So.....since I now figured out that something has screwed up my kidneys, and it appears that drugs may have been a part....along with my lifestyle(I take full responsibility)....I'm getting into "shape".....now....I know....I could have done that sooner, and it is the kidney problem that has gotten me off my ass......anyway.....I'm trying to get blood pressure and sugar down......I've started hitting the gym(3X week).....1 hour on the treadmill plus some core work, I've knocked off 15lb's so far, and headed down for another 20lb's to get me under 200.....my blood pressure has not been above 120/ 65 in the past 2 weeks....today it was 92/55....no alcohol in 2 weeks, TRYING to quit the sugar(I do not have an addictive personality) however SUGAR has been as tuff as it gets!!! to boil it down....it is my plan to get out of the drug business!!!! when I get this mostly under control, I'll get into the carb thing....I know enough about it to keep my distance, however not complete abstinence....

Key word "diet". It must be a lifestyle, not a diet. I successfully made it my lifestyle. You are correct, it's not easy, but it's now my lifestyle, for the last 5 years. My last bloodwork was fantastic
True, bad choice of words. Dieting is never a viable option for the long term. I have helped one friend loose well over 100 pounds. I have repeatedly told them: you didn’t put it on in a day and you can’t take it off in a day.

It is one day a time. You can’t just stop eating. But you can choose what you eat. So as you said it is a lifestyle change.
