Unwelcomed Suprise at Adventure Outdoors

I just read AO latest sale circular online. Their "cash discount" only applies to firearms. It doesn't apply to safes, bows or other items.

Either people buying those items with cash are getting the shaft or people just need to admit it's a way for AO to squeeze a little more out of you.

Perhaps you need to look into the margins of firearms vs accessories.

If I planned on opening a gun store, perhaps I would. However, I'm a consumer. A collector. So, I won't.

AO can build their business model any way they choose. I, as a consumer, will shop elsewhere. I'll also voice my opinion about their pricing whenever possible. I've earned that right as an ODT member.

Unless as the owner of ODT, you're insisting I shut my pie hole.

Well I wouldnt call it earned. We give the right to speak freely when you sign up. Regardless of whether what you are saying is actually correct or not. If you have no intention on educating yourself on the details of what you are actually discussing, it's going to be very difficult for you to engage in worthwhile and productive debates. But yes, you are free to say whatever you like.

That's one thing I do find surprising, since they could easily do a 3% 'cash discount' on accessories, since those have a lot higher margins. Whatever they are doing though seems to work for them though, they've certainly grown a bunch over the last 10 years or so.

Because they have the higher margins they can absorb the fee.
Look at it this way, if every customer complained about the 3% fee on firearms via credit card, and AO listened, do you think they would raise or lower the prices to be uniform? They would raise them, because that fee must be factored in when determining their profit margin. The only thing complaining about it is going to do is punish those that will bring cash. It will not affect the guy complaining about using his credit card. He's just now not going to know why he was charged an extra 3%. Ignorance is bliss? I guess so.

I’d rather they do that . Just add whatever fees you want and display the price . That way I can choose early on buying there or not . Don’t pop up stuff at the register. Food depot does that

OP should have found the same gun with a blue “used” tag. The 3% only applies to “new” firearms. It is clearly stated on the stupid form they have you initial when you fill out the 4473.

Now I agree that the 3% thing is kind BS, but as someone who spent 10 years in a mom and pop type of retail shop I understand CC fees. The right way would be to mark all the new firearms up by3% then offer a cash discount. It used to be against some of the Cc companies policies to barge a “fee” to the consumer. Price the consumer paid was supposed to be the price on the tag plus the tax. Not sure if that is still the case. The shop I worked in would offer a cash discount of 8% on purchases over $200, covered the sales tax.

What I'm seeing here is that laws and rules about how to handle fees like this are all over the map, literally. They seem to depend on a combination of state law, processor rules, and what the business wants to do.

The only hard and fast rule I saw in the article @Old_School posted was that any surcharge had to be posted at the point of sale, and broken out separately on the receipt. That was federal law, and it doesn't sound like GA law does anything to change or modify that.
