Unwelcomed Suprise at Adventure Outdoors

That's an interesting story. As I've explained to more than one Walmart who called because someone refused to show their receipt to the "receipt checker" at the exit, they can't 'make' someone stop and do that...unless they have sufficient reason to believe the person has stolen something. And then they'd better be damned sure before they detain someone otherwise they're looking at a civil lawsuit or even criminal charges for false imprisonment especially if the encounter leads to a physical altercation.

Right on @Rock Man I worked Loss Prevention at Kmart in college (remember the Big K???) and the one thing they drilled into us over and over was NEVER detain/stop someone unless you were 100% sure they had selected the item and passed every possible chance to pay for it and were leaving the store. Civil liability fears far outweighed any concern for lost profits.

The checking of the receipt at the door is different vs. all other gun stores I've been in, but it's not that big of a deal to me. Given the area the store is in, it is a theft deterrent. **DON'T GET ME WRONG**, clearly the door guy just saw you check out and walk directly to him, so it does reek of being silly and over the top, but again, consider the area the store is in, the merchandise they deal in, I can understand their diligence.

For what it's worth, they check your receipt at Costco and Sam's Club (among other stores), and nobody raises a fuss about that.

**Disclaimer: I'm not a big fan of AO. They are their own worst enemy with some of their policies and shenanigans, especially compared to other stellar gun stores like Cherokee G&P and Georgia Gun Store.

My policy is not to show my receipt. If they think l stole something( I dont know how in the hell you could get out of AO with a stolen firearm,) then they need call the police. Once the police demand my receipt I'll produce it and the next call I make will be to an attorney to discuss a case against the store and a criminal case against the person calling the police for reporting of a false crime.

Bastards!

Paying 3% up charge for not paying with cash is standard at AO, Buds, GunBroker. Bass Pro and the likes have their prices adjusted for credit card fees. Adventure Outdoors has good priced firearms, sometimes better than here on ODT. Not to mention great selection.

Folks, you pay that fee no matter where or what you buy unless there is a notice about the increase. Most of the time it's calculated into the original cost of the item, which means it's the folks that aren't using a card that are really getting screwed.
BINGO!

Sporting Arms in Winterville is a small operation with very good prices, and they don't charge a fee, and don't have a minimum purchase.

What hasn't been mentioned is that not charging a fee facilitates impulse purchases. If you don't happen to have $500 dollars burning a hole in your pocket, and momma takes care of the check book, plastic can scratch that itch. If I was just "browsing" and saw a gun I wanted, the 3% fee would (and has) totally turn me off.
