Well, for some, a barrel extension could be pinned on. It's not much fun to contemplate. More difficult to use when you need to when the ATF boys come around to shoot your dog.

Sure, as long as the furthest permanent part of the barrel is 16" then it counts as a rifle barrel.

Like I saw this 10/22 barrel designed for steel challenge, it's 5" of barrel then 11" of lightweight shroud to make it rifle length.

My understanding was that there is an organization with a lawsuit already teed up just waiting for this to be published. I don't remember now any specifics or which organization(s) may have been involved, but if I'm not completely mistaken, this should be getting challenged in court very soon.
