Water!!!

Just thinking out loud here...

So, water. It is a biatch. You need it of course, and if none is coming from the tap you had better have a source close by. Its cheap and easy to get, and can be rotated easily.

So whats the problem?

Its heavy. It has to be treated and stored carefully. If you have to bug out you had better be strong, or have lots of small containers. You need to store it using a lot of different container sizes and methods. You need a LOT of it if you don't have a natural source. You use a lot of it every day. Without it, you will die.

So, what does that mean for prepping? The general rule of thumb is a gallon per day per person. So, this would last one person six months or so:

or this for three months for just you:

Thats a lot to buy, store, rotate, replenish, and move, no doubt. Any tips? :D

You can get 350 gallon HDPE (High Density Poly Ethylene) 'Totes' for cheap of you look. I would imagine having a few on hand is a good idea, you can fill them with a garden hose that is for drinking (standard ones leach lead) $19/Walmart. Then a BERKY water purifier. Big Berky, Royal or Crown depending on group size. The 700 gallons will keep you hydrated whilst you find a good route to the nearest Spring, river, stream, lake, pond or swimming pool. They Berky system can make the nastiest of water suitable for human consumption, so any of these sources will do fine. To me, if you have the time and money to prep for this absolute top priority, that is a solid plan. If your on the move, hand-held Catadyn and a vile of bleach. One little toothpick droplet goes a long way.
