a good analogy to try to remember as far as getting good penetration
is picturing a water hose stream cutting into the ground

the water stream is your electrode and the ground is your work piece

They look way better than my welds....but I'm not a welder by trade. Just use a mig welder for repairs around the house.

agreed, pretty does not ensure complete penetration into base metal or leg length being per the procedure, many of pretty welds failed at X Ray.
