Happens in just about every "civil war" or "social unrest".
Oh snap I got my merit badge for 400 posts.
If you want an idea of what the SHTF is, go to youtube and search for "end of liberty". I nearly vomited after watching it. I don't know what will come first, but when the SHTF, it will come in avalanches.

We all should be working our hind-quarters off keeping it from happening ... This is because I feel that there will not be any winners ... just the lucky and the dead!
Most likely an economic collapse as the result of a seemingly overnight, massive loss of confidence in the U.S.dollar (resulting in rampant inflation like post WWI Germany).
The price of food and basic comodities will skyrocket, banks will fail, and what money you have will be of more use to start a fire than anything else.
Don't kid yourselves, this will likely be a World Event, and some military action is also likely between and among nations ... even nuclear events are a good bet.
Then when people get hungry and cold ... The SHTF for real ... Your Gold, Silver, and Diamonds will be of far less value than firearms, ammunition, and food.
People will kill to save their children from starving or freezing ... People will band together in roving mobs: killing, looting and fighting among themselves.
Military and police units will be able to control small areas of geography to begin with, then they will join in the fray as they will also want to protect their own families.
To begin with, large storehouses of food and basic necessities of life will become prime targets ... then your survivalists with large hoards of supplies that they will feel compelled to defend
as well as anyone and everyone "caught out in the open" will be savaged by one or more of these lawless bands. Even those that are "fleet of foot" and can get into a wilderness environment
will need to be warry of others that do the same.

If yellow stone erupts as it will in time. We have a global problem not just local. The fall out would inevitably send majority of the globe in a near mini Ice age, not just in the states.... Yellow stone erupting would be worse than a single nuclear attack....
The only people who will still work for the government after EOW will be the cops , teachers, anyone in a union and 100,000,000 starving communists.

If it's a natural disaster like an asteroid, then preparedness will do you no good if you are in the wrong place. Even those that survive initially will not be able to last long no matter how well prepared they are. Those that are on the "fringe" area of the disaster will need to focus on getting to a more survivable area. The same would be true of any disaster that would destroy large areas, even man made ones. Be prepared to travel.
If it's social in nature there will be no overnight fall. It will be progressive. What will happen is that we will no longer be able to rely on or society for support as much as we do now. There will still be some type of government and law enforcement, but it will not be able to do much to help the individual. The best we can hope for is that it stays out of our way so we can take care of ourselves. That means basic, pre-industrial skills in producing food and shelter will be the second most valuable skill to have. The most valuable will be the ability to protect what you have from others. Lots of stored guns and ammo are going to beat the hell out of home made bows and arrows. Seeds, simple tools and, most importantly, a good library that has all the skills you need in it will be invaluable. Knowledge will still be power. It will just be a different knowledge base. Figure out how to live simply and securely and you'll have it made. Sharing that knowledge base with others in your area will go a long way to stabilizing the region and make you a LOT of new friends.
