what kind of spider is this?

One of the reasons I hate spiders is that they seem to be attracted to me. One of my earliest memories is of one running up my arm while I was playing in a garden. I have been bitten by them a half dozen times and some of those bites were bad. I'm talking bad enough to have to cut dead tissue from the wound for it to eventually heal. I never saw one that bit me through a mosquito suit and two light layers of clothing while deer hunting in Florida, but I could see two punctures about a half inch apart. That must have been one big SOB.

And when it gets cool outside, the buggers want in.

At dusk a few years ago, I was finishing spreading mulch in the yard. When I dumped a bag, the mulch exploded with wolf spiders....
Yes I was done for the day!
Took several years to get rid of them.
Too many friggin bugs here in the south.....just sayin'

The Garden spider (which this one is not) is quite large. growing up in Illinois we used to run through the corn fields and sooner or later you would run face first into one of their webs at a full sprint.
The wolf spider (which is what the op pictured) is a bad mofo, they are the Spec Ops of the arachnid world, part Nija, part Chuck Norris, and very cool. They are best left alone.
While living in Colorado the wife called me to the shop to identify a spider. This thing was enormous, must have come in with a shipment of conduit that recently arrived. Anyway, I found a jar and set out to capture the big guy. He ran behind a 55 gal drum where I was able to grab him (thumb and index finger) he latched onto the metal ring(seam) of the drum and as I pulled his mandables scratched the paint from the drum. I was able to get him to let go without pulling him apart. Took him home and put him in the terrarium with a pet snake. Next morning the snake was dead and looking a little flat. Looking back, I am glad that thing did not lock onto me, the fangs (mandables) were huge, it would have been very painful.
