For a professional? About a grand, maybe a little more if it has to be brought up to current code.
If you've done basic plumbing before, it's not rocket surgery... well, it might be if you mess up the gas connections bad enough. It does take tools, probably a pipe cutter and de-burrer, pipe wrench, etc. Shark bites are acceptable in GA, I've used them, no issues whatsoever (just make sure the pipe is deburred).

I brought mine up to code with cut off valves pressure blader and exterior drain pan and plumbing for that 1250.00

Thanks for the replies. $1200-1500 seems about right. I have replaced about 10-12 but at 70 have decided to write a check
Typical install is $1500 including new heater and disposal of old one. Will be more for a thermal expansion tank, copper pipe, t&P line, vent work or extra gas fittings (bringing up to code).
$300 labor is access is easy.

Even after I told him to buy the EXACT same heater .
If you get the exact same gas heater then everything hooks right back up in the same place .
