What vehicle would you buy to drive 85 miles a day in Atlanta?

Mazda 3 or cx5 if you want a little more room.

Timing chain instead of a timing belt so that's one less thing to worry about.

Son is currently commuting from Canton to Tech and is getting 30mpg in a '13 CX5.

Good luck in your search!
I forgot about the Mazda 3... for $20k you could get a very slightly used Mazda3, the base models are about $25k or so. If I had to drive a full sized car, I'd probably go with a Mazda3 hatchback.

GM car transmissions have been weak for a long time. I'd be shopping for a 5-10 year-old Toyota Camry or Corolla.
Nah, unless its hybrid. Literally, its the way, all green crap aside. If you want efficiency its hybrid or electric. Irrefutable facts. Especially electric, but gas is somewhat down to your point.

What newish vehicle would you buy if you suddenly had a new job that required an 85 mile round trip commute 3 or 4 days a week in Atl traffic?
The least safe vehicle I could find, hoping it would kill me and quickly.

I had a Mitsubishi Lancer from back in 2013 or 2014. A good value: that was only $ 15,000 brand new. It got 37MPG, has a reasonably peppy 4-cylinder engine (maybe 2.4 L if I remember right).

It did have a CVT transmission that worked perfectly well. The car got totaled in a wreck at about 105,000 miles but I expected it to last over 250,000 if not for the crash.
