I would have said electric if you could still use the HOV lanes and they were in the areas you are driving but now that they are just like every other car (their "free use of the toll lanes" ended last month), I would say a Mazda CX-5. My daughter, mother and niece all have them. great cars, cheap and easy to fix, and they drive very well and are fun to zip around town. plus I don't worry about when it gets a door ding or a chip in the windshield. insurance isn't bad and just a good car. Buy the latest gen, I think 2014+. Not much more $$ but nicer and car play. I added car play to my daughters car (pretty easy only took me like 2 hours following youtube videos and about $100).

There’s been some great suggestions in this thread for sure. My two cents for what it’s worth:
Be careful with the highest safety rating: generally speaking the higher that rating, the less of a wreck will total it out. Safety come from hoe the vehicle body crushes.
I would avoid a standard transmission for the sake of your legs. I drove a 6 speed in traffic for a year and it gets old quick.
Hard to go wrong with used Honda Accord or Toyota Camry.

I dunno about the CarPlay and android but adding Bluetooth is easy
You can buy a Bluetooth receiver for a lot of cars
We installed it years ago in the wife’s2001 turbo diesel beetle , it plugged in where the factory CD changer plugged in
In my 2005 expedition we got a Bluetooth adapter that plugs into the backseat overhead DVD player
My friend used to drive alot around Atlanta and he always used a 92-97 Thunderbird or cougar

I drive 30k a year around Atlanta and Georgia in a 2017 4 door4 wd chevy pickup but my employer supplies the truck and the gas and at 12.5 mpg the gas adds up fast

Once you get in , the Fit has aLOT of room
Mrs Roundhouse has a mini coooper that is hard for me to get in and out of but once you in it’s plenty of room and comfortable, and withe the turbocharged engine and a six speed manual , it’s really fast .

Ford Cmax hybrid 40+ mpg drives like a little sports car but plenty of head and leg room charges battery when brakes are applied.Last year made 2017 can find a nice low mileage one for under 10k.
I love those Minis. Yes they have a lot of room. Back in the day it was hard finding a car with enough leg room. I get in a mini and I don't even need to put the seat all the way back. Yes the stick and the auto are two completely different cars. That manual drives like a go kart on rails!!
