Grew up in the South, but moved to NM right out of college. Local joint, Calvin's Red Crow, served up a Jalapeno Burger. I liked "hot" food, so I ordered one and my Mexican buddy/coworker ordered a cheeseburger to go. Got home and after one bite, I was heading for the refrigerator for some milk! I asked him why he didn't order a Jalapeno burger himself since he was from Mexico. He said they were too hot for the Mexican locals. Only "white boys" were dumb enough to eat them. However, on cold days you always saw the older Mexicans on the oil rigs pull a fresh jalapeno out of their pockets to munch on...warmed them up on the inside on those sub-20° blustery days...
