The chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, Connecticut Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman, said the military has become a "direct target of violent Islamist extremism" within the United States.

Did you know that military members are not allowed to carry a firearm onto the base with them? The highly trained individuals that are entrusted with the responsibility of defending our country are not given the same opportunity to defend themselves while traveling to and from base.

With the very real threat of Islamic Terrorism manifesting itself throughout our country, should military members be allowed to carry a personal firearm in their vehicle while on base?

What do you think?

Military members, active duty and on assignment, should be able to carry their weapons on base with them. You never know what will happen and when an event, as previously mentioned, will occur.

FS Reg 190-2
This regulation provides guidance to the 24th IN Div (Mech) now 3rd ID and Fort Stewart personnel concern-mg tile registration, use, restrictions and transportation of privately owned weapons on the installation.

a. Persons legally authorized to possess firearms, ammunition, knives (with blades longer than three inches), bows and arrows, and crossbows, may carry or transport legally possessed and registered (if required) weapons while holding in his/her possession a weapon registration, and when appropriate, a valid state hunting license, valid Fort Stewart hunting permit, or area access pass under the following conditions.

(1) Weapons may be carried or transported only for purposes of hunting, target shooting, selling the weapon, or having the weapon repaired.

(2) Weapons may not be stored in vehicles overnight and maybe transported in vehicles only for an authorized purpose. Although a weapon maybe kept in a vehicle during duty hours for purposes of an authorized use during lunch or immediately after duty hours, stopping at installation facilities while en route is prohibited, except for essential items such as bread, milk, gas, or emergency auto repair items. Stopping at the Pass and Permit Office for hunting supplies and/or meals is authorized.

b. When carried, weapons will be carried in an open manner (not concealed). Firearms will be unloaded when carried (i.e., projec-tiles physically separated from the firearms, not just removed from the chamber) except when actually engaged in hunting or shoot-ing. Knives will be carried in a sheath or scabbard worn in a clearly visible manner. Commanders may authorize the carrying of a privately owned knife with a blade over three inches to field duty, provided it is car-ried IAW tile Victory Standard and exposed in a sheath/scabbard. The Provost Marshal may authorize the carrying of a privately owned, sheathed, lock blade knife on mili-tary and DOD police officers' pistol belts.

c. When transported in a vehicle, weapons will be in plain view in the passenger area of the vehicle or secured (locked) in the trunk or other rear compartment of the vehicle, not readily accessible from the passenger area (i.e., locked tool box secured to bed of a truck). Unattended vehicles with weapons in plain view will be locked. Firearms will be unloaded and the ammunition physically separated from the firearms. The glove compartment of a vehicle is NOT an author-ized compartment for storing pistols.

d. Firearms, bows and arrows, crossbows, BB and pellet guns will not be loaded, fired or used within the cantonment areas of the installation; within 50 yards of any public highway, street or Fort Stewart numbered road or across building or similar structures; any aircraft landing facility (to include cur-rently used landing or stage fields); any ammunition storage area (except on ap-proved firing range when properly author-ized).

e. Persons not affiliated with DOD or this installation must remain on Georgia State Highways 119 and 144 when carrying or transport-mg weapons through the installa-tion and must be in full compliance with Georgia State Law governing possession, use and transportation of said weapons. Travel off of these state highways or stop-ping, for other than emergency purposes, while on the installation is prohibited.
