Why can't I get BOLD type to work?

I realize being an old guy I'm not the most computer literate, but jeez.
Instructions in FAQ for bold type seem pretty simple, yet I can't "get 'er dun".
Someone please enlighten me so I can feel even more ignorant and incompetent.

Before you type. Touch the b and should be good to go. First thing in tool bar.or highlight the item you want in bold then press b

On IPad or IPhone touch the “B” prior to typing in your text.it sits right above the ICON...!
