One of the good guys Phydoux Phydoux was kind enough to give me some well-needed componentry. One of the things was a barrel that have a lot of surface rust and the bore looked pretty shabby. I did my usual cleaning and then decided to run a bore snake through it with some good old number nine, after a couple passes it looks pretty darn good. Why doesn't anyone ever mention boresnake?

Some don't like them because they can get stuck in a barrel if not used correctly or used for too long. I don't clean them, they're cheap enough I just chuck them when they get that nasty. I also only use them as a quick clean, barrels still get a real bore brush to really clean them.

One of the things I found helpful was to make sure the lead part had the product on it in a sufficient quantity, and then of course run a couple patches through it some light oil and run a couple more patches through it.

My experience with the bore snake is this. Good for a "light, quick clean" but not enough to deep clean the bore. I use it on my Ruger MKII since field strip is a pain. Still have to do a deep clean occasionally. I use a dry rag to soak up as much of the liquid by squeezing it over the snake when done and that gets them reasonably clean.
