Would you rather have 5 shots or 16 shots?

Carry both, and have a shotgun or rifle with you and where you can get to it. You are not looking for trouble, you are taking care of your property. Makes sense, given the information you have given us, to hope for the best and prepare for the worst. I agree with letting someone know where you are and it would not hurt to have someone call you at a set time or times. You have but one life, take care of it.

^^^^ This.

357 is a bad dude with properly selected ammo

I always choose more rounds over everything else, 17 rounds beats 6. I choose 9 mm because it will get the job done and they have a tendency to have guns with decent capacity. 40, 45, and 357 are also great rounds and have lots of supporters and I shoot all of them too but I choose to carry 9. Having said all that remember the rule of 3's: 90% of all gun fights in civilian and law enforcement (based on FBI numbers) occur in 3 Seconds at a range of 3 Yards, and there are 3 shots fired.

I go with the biggest round I can shoot the most accurately in a particular platform... my search ended with the G30. 9+1 with an extra mag of 10.

I was like you for years; a revolver man. However, as our society has deteriorated in the last 10 years or so; the thought of only six rounds (even with an extra speed loader) struck me as insufficient. While I was very good with my .357's and .44 Spl's, S&W Model 1950 .44 Spl.jpg the thought of multiple assailants made me wish to adjust my thinking.

I now carry a Smith and Wesson M&P .40 pistol (15 plus one) and an additional 15 round magazine (clip, if there are any news media people reading!:doh:). In the warm summer months I carry a Smith and Wesson M&P 40 Shield (7 plus one) and an additional 7 round magazine.

I can shoot the M&P's at least as good as I could the revolvers and I have seen what the .40 S&W round will do to animals....deer, coyotes and bob cats. A nice center mass double tap WILL take care of any two legged varmints quite well. So my suggestion is: make the switch to an auto pistol and be ready for any scenario!!:nod: Welcome to our modern society!! :puke:
I may have lived too long!!

I EDC a P938 with the extended mag and 2 back up mags very close by if not on me.
I also built this little companion as peace of mind for situations like OP described or just the general break down of society that seems all but inevitable.
