Would your untrained family dog protect you or your family from an intruder?

Probably not and I wouldn't expect that of him.
His job in the intruder dept is to provide early warning for me and/or my wife and then let us handle the problem.

This is the natural response. It's called a Pack Alert. Though it can look aggressive, all that is happening is that the dog is letting the pack know there is an interloper and letting the interloper know they have been spotted and everyone is aware of them. It's a great deterrent and is the best reason to have a dog for security. Just don't mistake it for any real promise of protective behavior.

Because this is so commonly a purely instinctive behavior, with no need for creating it through training, it also reduces the legal liability of having a dog that has been specifically trained to exhibit any aggressive behavior. The moment any bite work is done with a dog it opens the door to all kinds of legal complications if the dog even threatens to bite someone. A dog CAN be determined to be Deadly Force and then all those laws apply.

This one probably would. She barks at strange people, sniffs strange dogs, kills possums and armadillos with one bite.

This one ... I'd be cleaning up puddles, but if one of the other dogs got into it, he'd jump in like he meant it. Seen that happen once, very surprising.

This is the quiet one. I'm not sure at all about him. He lived a fairly solitary feral existence for a while before he picked our house as acceptable.

But he's since made himself very much at home. Catch him with a hangover, I expect he'd be poor company.

Someone mentioned their dog growing up around a brother. I have also seen mention of dogs sensing fear. I have a friend who had a 100+ Rottweiler I had been around since its mamma was a puppy. I often went over and fed her when they were out of town and snuggled on the sofa with her when we were all hanging out. I went by their house the day I was planning to propose to my wife. As soon as I walked in the house B.B. sensed my fear and knew something was right and came at me barking and growling showing teeth etc. Our verbal commands were void and until the owner grabbed her she was en route. I guess what Im saying is dogs since fear and know when something is up. After I purposed my wife understood why she acted the way she did. That said I never was comfortable around that dog again. In reality Im not comfortable around most dogs because I know they can sense Im uncomfortable. Remember like a firearm a dog attack like a justified shooting will be life changing for the owner as well as the chewed on.

Just for clarification, the idea that dogs "sense" fear is correct, but it's not mystical. They read human body language at a level that most people just can't comprehend. Even if you think you are not exhibiting any, you are and they can see it.

The owner needs to be very careful with that roty. If it reacts this way with someone it knows, this dog could be very bad news.

Mine isn't protecting anyone. She'll bring you a toy as soon as you walk in the door. She goes to work w/ me every day, so I had to make sure she would be friendly to everyone. Lots of kids in and out in the summertime.

The dog has since passed. Unfortunately my anxiety around dogs hasn't.
