243 cal Single shot is a great starter gun. Light enough recoil, but still lethal. Single shots like Harrington & Richardson are very safe and easy to use. You can easily tell if it is loaded... I know some grown ups that still use these because they hunt thick land and never take long shots, so they have no use for a heavier caliber.

Surprisingly an AR-15 carbine with the collapsible stock works well with the kids. .223 is a bit light but with good shot placement will work and is legal in GA.

A .243 was my first choice but the adult stock was too long of a reach for her. A short stock youth model would fill the bill.

Mossberg ATR bantam in 308/243. bantam=youth stock
