  1. MAJOR UPDATE: Phineas C. Zoid - Pistol Whack . . . . . (my first custom 1911 build)

Yep, Brownells, Midway, Amazon... India Stones or Arkansas Stones or "hones" Basically the same stones used to sharpen knives. You can get a set with a variety of "grits". They are the way you want to polish flat surfaces like rails, sear, hammer hooks etc. Not terribly expensive and will come...
  2. MAJOR UPDATE: Phineas C. Zoid - Pistol Whack . . . . . (my first custom 1911 build)

Stoning the bottom of the slide will take care of the area marked "D" in red. looks like you only have to take .001" from "B" on the frame and you should be GTG. Id use a stone on the frame rails and check as I go, you should be able to get a really nice fit!
  3. MAJOR UPDATE: Phineas C. Zoid - Pistol Whack . . . . . (my first custom 1911 build)

The rails on that JEM frame are probably way oversize so it can be used with any slide, this is a good thing! You have to find a way to measure the inside width of the groove in the slide the frame rails ride in ( I use an adjustable parallel) and mill/ file or stone the frame rails to fit the...
  4. MAJOR UPDATE: Phineas C. Zoid - Pistol Whack . . . . . (my first custom 1911 build)

No, your right, I was talking about just the work to the frame. Its always more fun to fit the slide to the frame first, so at least it kinda looks like a pistol, makes me feel better! Then the barrel, then the other stuff mentioned.....
  5. MAJOR UPDATE: Phineas C. Zoid - Pistol Whack . . . . . (my first custom 1911 build)

Geezer has you going in the right direction and in the right order. I always start the frame work with the trigger, slowly removing metal from the top of the trigger till its a tight fit, then lap with metal polish. then the rest of the fire control group, and finally the grip safety. Just...
  6. MAJOR UPDATE: Phineas C. Zoid - Pistol Whack . . . . . (my first custom 1911 build)

Looking forward to following along. Only hear great things about the JEM frames. Seems like thats the way all the custom builders are going. Will be cool to get your impressions.
  7. Colt Competition 1911 .45 Project Gun, Complete!

Thanks Brian, They are the stock Colt grips. The Stan Chen magwell has you cut the frame down by about .200" and weld it in place. So you actually cut the grips shorter to fit, makes them look like they are straight cut magwell grips, but they are just cut down. I think thats the right model of...
  8. 1911 Light Primer Strikes

If the over travel screw on the trigger is not set correctly, the half-cock notch on the hammer will rub the sear as the hammer falls and slow the hammer. A good test is to verify the gun is empty, hold the muzzle straight up and place a wooden pencil in the barrel with the rubber eraser against...
  9. 1911 upgrades and help

Shoot and enjoy! Swap out the grips all you want, maybe a S&A magwell if you really want. A fresh 16 or 17 lb recoil spring is a good Idea. The best thing you can do, is learn how to detail strip the gun. Ive never understood why the 1911 got the reputation of being complicated to strip. There...
  10. Colt Competition 1911 .45 Project Gun, Complete!

Exactly! Wellison you described it better than I did. There are commercially available spiders, but where is the fun in that. Making this one was a good practice project, and cost about $10! If I had a larger spindle bore, I could just chuck it in the 4 jaw and be done. or even better, the...
  11. Colt Competition 1911 .45 Project Gun, Complete!

HAHA thanks jglenn. I know you've seen that lathe looking a little rougher than that! I try and clean up the swarf between projects. I put a lot of time into getting that thing cleaned up, need to be better at keeping it that way! Im going to re crown my back up Wad gun at 11 deg. and see if...
  12. RUST!

good post BHJ, thanks. Ive always used 0000 steel wool like the other guys here. Ill try your recommendation next time!
  13. Colt Competition 1911 .45 Project Gun, Complete!

Geezer, feel free to chime in any time.
  14. Colt Competition 1911 .45 Project Gun, Complete!

Wellison,"reverse crown" has become a term loosely tossed around when referring to a deep cut crown, but yes, you are correct. the crown is single point cut from the inside out. Set the lathe compound to the desired angle and cut using a boring tip. I use a home made HSS tool. Its well known...
  15. Colt Competition 1911 .45 Project Gun, Complete!

That's good to know about the mags. We have been using Mec-Gar P-18 mags and so far so good.....
  16. Colt Competition 1911 .45 Project Gun, Complete!

Thanks guys. Hopefully we can just put it to rest. @bluesman2a , its the double stack with the full rail. Pretty cool gun for the money. Ramped barrel. Got several hundred rounds through it now with no issues. Just going to do some cosmetic work and some slide lightening, then Cerakote. Ill try...
  17. Colt Competition 1911 .45 Project Gun, Complete!

@fifthhorsm , I appreciate your concern, but will have to respectfully disagree on a few points. TIG welding a 4140 forging with er70s-6 with a small bead at the front and rear of the rails only, produces a very small heat affected zone. While welding, heat sinks are used. Immediately after...
  18. Colt Competition 1911 .45 Project Gun, Complete!

Thanks! Wish it wasnt such an expensive damn hobby! I only get to do one or two a year. Ive found its a little cheaper starting with a quality base gun like a Colt or Springfield, then building one from a slide/ frame unless you get a screaming deal on both. Ive got one other firearm project...
  19. Colt Competition 1911 .45 Project Gun, Complete!

    Thanks guys. Much appreciated.
  20. Colt Competition 1911 .45 Project Gun, Complete!

Thanks guys. Its a small detail, but the part Im most excited about is the barrel crown. I finally made the fixtures and tooling to be able to do this on my lathe, and keep the crown perfectly concentric with the bore. Ill also be able to cut chambers and thread barrels, so Im glad I finally got...
