That is a good argumentI still have yet to find a rifle caliber to contend with my beloved .270’s for what I enjoy doing with them. Absurdly accurate in many bullet weights, it is a reloaders wet dream! components and powder for days, even 270 was still on the shelf during the Covid nonsense… will smash big northern deer sized game with 140’s and 150’s. Grenade coyotes with laser 90’s and 110’s. every imaginable rifle configuration from every manufacturer is available in it…
For me to hunt, I like to keep it to a 2" group max. Too many things can happen hunting. And I like to make a clean kill. I know someone that has used a 7 mag exclusively for a long time. He swears by it7mm mag was my first deer rifle I bought with my own money at 18. Winchester model 70 I would shoot a 12x12 cardboard box at 700 yards with it out in an open field by the house I grew up in using my buddies dads reloads.
Man at 18 with a stock model 70 I was just happy to hit the box at 700. I at the time was impressed by that. By todays standards of my shooting if a rifle doesn't cloverleaf or better at 100 or even two hundred it gets sent down the road. For me to hunt, I like to keep it to a 2" group max. I know guys that swear by the Core Lokt bulletsAnd all I've ever used was the old Remington Core Lokt.
180 PSP In the 06.
150 SP in the 270. The heaviest I could find at the time.
I did find a couple deer I shot with the 270.
But I like that instant gratification of watching that buck drop right where he stands, before the sound of the shot ever hits his ears.
Dance with what brung ya. I've never lost a deer with a 308. But I have passed on shots that would push the 308 too far in brush. That's why I chose a 375 H&H for heavy brush the last several years. Never have to pass on a shot even if I have to shoot through a small tree. Always hit my mark and never loose a deer or meatGive me .270 for whitetail, or most anything in North America. I've taken a few animals. There is nothing better.
.30/06 same deal. It’s a great round, and more versatile than anything else, IMO.
.243 is outstanding. Great round for whitetail…Excellent ballistic co-efficiency for what is….I always thought .243 should have been the round Eugene Stoner built the AR platform around.
I’ve seen a lot of bad luck with .308…Just my experience. I know more than a few who have had the same experience. Great round, great man stopper, not the best for deer, IMO. I’ve never hunted with .308 because of what I’ve seen, up close and personal. I would deer hunt with a .243 Win any day over a .308…I know, I’m crazy, but I’m 46 years in the deer woods crazy.
We go with what we know.
Happy 100th to the .270win. My favorite deer round of all time. And no, I’m not a fudd or a boomer, but thanks anyway.
Every round I mentioned is an old round. They work.
I understand. Most people can't even see that far much less hit itMan at 18 with a stock model 70 I was just happy to hit the box at 700. I at the time was impressed by that. You know people kill elk with sharp sticks? I would be willing to bet you any amount of money you want that I could elk all day with a .243 and my 95gr. NBT loads. If you can’t kill an elk with a .243 quit hunting and take up knitting. It’ll reliably kill elk and .243 win won’t.
