I had that happen to a 99 ford contour and it was a cam sensor.
Had that problem, had to replace the sensor at the intake, co we think, after that ran like a through bred...
My truck was shutting off like that, tried a few things before finally getting a new computer and it's been fine since.
Try checking the fuel cap??

you just have to diagnose it logically
what codes are you getting?
we have a Bosch U-SCAN its about $80 at any auto parts store that plugs into the OBD port where the code reader goes, and it shows lots of real time data on what the engine and computer is doing, and reads the trouble codes.
any shade tree mechanic should have one of these. its worth every penny when you are having troublw with a car.
need to install a fuel pressure gauge, and maybe a light inline with the wire to the fuel pump,
so you can tell if the fuel pressure dropping is causing it,
on my expedition the fuel pump relay would intermittently get hot and cut off, killing the power to the pump
and the relay is soldered to the circuit board in the fusebox, all the really important relays, like for the power windows and headlights and stuff are plug in replacable, but the fuel pump relay is permanantly soldered on, and you have to replace the entire fusebox, but that cured it,
but we wired up a light and installed a gauge so we could tell if the fuel pump was losing power and when

When you say it randomly dies and won't restart, I'm assuming the motor turns over fine?
