.223 ammo for deer

Anyone use a 7.62x39? Thinking about using my AK this year with a 5 round mag.
Not trying to thanks the subject. Very interested to hearing answers for both. Would a varmint round work better with 556?
Yes, its awesome. Think of it as a semi 30/30. I use soft point 7.62x39. In aks.
Ive used barnes triple shock 70 grain only on pigs. worked great
With that said 308(762x51) is just better than both.

So this year I've decided to put down the larger caliber guns and I'm gonna hunt with my Ar15 just to get back to good solid fundamental shot placement. (I love a good headshot)
I used to hunt with a .221 Fireball and I've never had a deer run, even with a small caliber so going back to a smaller round doesn't scare me.
Not shooting further than 200 yards.
Guns a 1:7 twist 14.5" barrel, Cmc trigger, all the goodies.
What ammo would yall recommend. I'm gonna end up testing a few different rounds, just looking for a few suggestions!
You wont' even be getting 3,000 fps out of that and won't get 1,000 lbs of energy at 100 yards out of that set up. 1,000 ft lbs is my absolute minimum but to each their own I guess.

See this thread for testing and results from a 10.5" AR out to 300 yards with a large selection of different ammo. http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread...-rifle-with-pricey-223-quot-hunting-ammo-quot

When I hunt with an AR, I use a 12". I'm always within 100 - 125 yards due to my area, and the results have been 100%. The wounds channels always have good expansion, and no deer has gone beyond 20 yards from heart/lung shots. I'd have no issues going out to 200 - 250 yards. 62 gr is my minimum.

I have killed (and found) many a deer with these

A friend of mine has killed a BUNCHA' Deer with .223's--His favorite load is the Federal Premium Vital-Shok loaded with the 60-gr. Nosler Partition--He's never had one run off when hit with this Ammo--'Course, he's ETHICAL as all get-out, and only takes shots he KNOWS he can make...

Biker, if you wanna' try some, I've got a coupla' extra Boxes around here somewhere... :) ....mikey357

I bought a box of Winchester Power Max Bonded in .223 for use with my AR, but I've never had a shot at a deer when I've carried my AR. The bullets are bonded 64 grain hollow points with a listed muzzle velocity of 3020fps and muzzle energy of 1296 ft/lbs. The only other bullets I'd personally consider in a .223 AR are something loaded with a 70+ grain Barnes TSX or TTSX. I've heard good things about 64 gr soft points, but I'm not a real big fan of soft point bullets.

The 70 tsx is a great hunting round, and from what i hear is the the 64 grain bonded softpoints are also a good choice.
